Playing professional basketball in another country offers a unique path filled with exciting opportunities and distinct challenges. I have been blessed to play and live in Australia,China and Europe! While stepping outside my familiar surroundings and adapting to new cultures, languages, and styles of play. This journey required more than just my skills on the court, it demanded resilience, confidence, openness, and a willingness to grow both personally and professionally.
Understanding the Decision to Play Abroad
Deciding to play basketball professionally in a foreign country often comes after weighing several factors. After college I moved to Atlanta to play semi pro and work out with Coach Payton. Staying ready so I didn't have to get ready. One day in June I walked into a gym to train a group of kids and Coach Payton puts me on the phone with Jay, a scout in Australia and the rest is history!
Before signing with a team overseas, it’s crucial to research the league’s reputation, the team’s stability and the living conditions in the host country. For example, European leagues are known for high-level competition and strong fan support. Meanwhile, leagues in Asia or South America might offer different styles of play and cultural experiences.
Adapting to New Playing Styles and Coaching
Basketball styles vary widely around the world. In Europe I found it more physical and defensive minded, it was a slower pace of play. Over in Australia the game emphasizes speed and outside shooting. China was a mixture of both depending on the day! Players must quickly adjust their approach to fit their team’s system and the league’s style or risk being fired from their job ( Basketball ).
Coaching methods can also differ. Some coaches prioritize discipline and structure, while others encourage creativity and individual expression. Building a good relationship with coaches and teammates helps players integrate smoothly and perform at their best. In Australia Coach Brad was a blessing in so many ways a Coach who believed in me!
Overcoming Language and Cultural Barriers
Language is often the biggest hurdle for players moving abroad. My first professional contract I was lucky to head over to Australia so the transition was a bit smoother as for they speak English regularly. Communication on and off the court is essential for teamwork and daily life. Over in China they provided translators for me. In Europe I took language lessons, they appreciate players who take the initiative to learn basic phrases and cultural norms.
Cultural differences extend beyond language. Food, social customs, and daily routines may be unfamiliar. Embracing these differences with an open mind can enrich the experience and help build connections with locals and teammates.
Managing Life Off the Court
Living abroad means handling practical matters like housing, banking, and healthcare in a new environment. Players should seek advice from their team or fellow athletes about reliable services and local regulations.
Maintaining mental health is equally important. Being away from family and friends can lead to feelings of isolation. Staying connected through video calls, joining local communities, or pursuing hobbies can provide balance and support.
While abroad when I wasn't playing ball or taking in the sites. I really started to fall in love with coaching and developing the next generation of ballers!

Financial Considerations and Contract Details
Contracts in international basketball vary widely in terms, payment schedules and benefits. Players should carefully review contracts and consider hiring an agent or legal advisor familiar with international sports agreements. Understanding tax obligations and currency exchange rates is also critical to managing finances effectively.
Most leagues offer additional perks such as housing, transportation, or bonuses for performance. Clarifying these details before signing helps avoid surprises and ensures a smoother transition.
Success Stories and Lessons Learned
I found success and personal growth through playing abroad. My experience in Europe improved my basketball IQ and maturity as a player. Adapting to a slower, more tactical game in helped me become a better decision-maker on the court. Australia I was allowed to be the go to guy and I had the best Coach ever! The friendships, sites seen and cultural insights gained are the most valuable parts of my journey. These memories show that while the path can be challenging, the rewards extend beyond basketball.
Preparing for the Future
Playing professionally abroad can open doors to new career opportunities, whether continuing as a player, coaching, or working in sports management internationally. For me my passion has turned into teaching life lessons through the game of basketball! Players should also plan for life after basketball by pursuing education or certifications that can support their transition. Web design was major and my plan for after basketball!
The skills gained from living and working in different countries adaptability, communication, and cultural awareness are assets in any career. Building a strong network and maintaining professionalism are key to long-term success!

Favorite Memories
I'd have to say my Mom traveling to Australia to hang out and watch me play. She has traveled all around the world to see me play and coach! Experiencing the great wall of China was by far a breath taking experience! Last but not least seeing Kangaroos and feeding a joey!
All of this FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME and I wouldn't change anything about my journey from underdog to professional basketball player!
